The SeaWolves dropped their second consecutive game on Friday night, falling in the opener of a three-game series to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 5-0.
Both starting pitchers, Pat Stanley for the 'Wolves and Marc Rzepczynski for the 'Cats did not allow a hit through the first two innings of the game. In the top of the third, Nick Gorneault led off with a single off of Stanley and Bryan Kervin walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. A wild pitch advanced the runners into scoring position while Luis Sanchez was hitting. Sanchez grounded out to Max Leon at first, bringing home Gorneault for a 1-0 New Hampshire lead. Todd Donovan followed with a base hit scoring Kervin, giving the 'Cats a 2-0 advantage.
New Hampshire would add to its lead in the top of the fifth. With one out, Sanchez triple off the wall in left, his first of the season. Donovan followed with a two-run home run, his first, giving the 'Cats a 4-0 lead. With two outs, Adam Dopriak homered to left for a 5-0 Fisher Cat lead. The home run for Dopriak was his 13th, tying Erie's Brennan Boesch for second in the league.
The lead was more than enough for the lefty Rzepczynski. He scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings, walking three while striking out eight to improve to 7-5.
Stanley (0-2) took his second consecutive loss going five innings, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
The 'Wolves had scoring opportunities in the fifth and sixth innings with runners on first and second with one out but failed to score. In the seventh, Scott Sizemore tripled with two outs but was stranded on third.
Erie has been limited to just three runs on 10 hits in its last 18 innings.
Erie used three relievers, Jay Sborz, Cody Satterwhite and Brett Jensen to finish out the game as they combined to throw four scoreless innings.
The loss drops the 'Wolves to 4-8 in the month of June.
