After being shut out just twice in the first 54 games of the season, the SeaWolves could not score for the third time in the last nine games in a 5-0 loss to Portland on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field.
Portland struck first in the bottom of the third against Erie starter Jonah Nickerson when Ryan Khoury led off and homered to left for his first long ball of the season, giving the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead.
The Sea Dogs would go ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Jorge Jimenez homered to right, his fifth of the season.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Sea Dogs would take a 3-0 lead. Khoury and Reid Engel led off with consecutive singles. A flyout to center off the bat of Josh Reddick would move Khoury to third and he would score on a sacrifice fly by Mark Wagner.
The 'Wolves were held hitless for the first three innings by Portland starter Adam Mills. Deik Scram led off the top of the fourth with a triple, his fourth, to left field but was stranded on third.
Mills (2-4) would limit the 'Wolves to one-hit over six innings of work with no walks while striking out a season-high eight.
Erie had one final scoring opportunity in the seventh against reliever Chris Province. Ryan Strieby reached on a two-out error by the shortstop Argenis Diaz and Casper Wells doubled to left putting two in scoring position. Alex Avila grounded out to second to end the inning.
The Sea Dogs would add two insurance runs in the eighth and went on for the 5-0 lead.
Erie had just three hits the game, the third by Mike Hollimon who singled to lead off the ninth.
Nickerson (4-5) took the loss allowing four runs on nine hits with no walks and three strikeouts in seven-plus innings of work.
Erie has now dropped eight of its last 12 road games and are just 6-9 in June.
