'Wolves Take Series With 5-1 Win

 Erie battled the rain on Thursday night but held on for a 5-1 win over Portland at Hadlock Field.

The SeaWolves jumped ahead early and used strong starting pitching as they won the series finale against the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday night, 5-1.
After a one-hour and nine minute rain delay, the SeaWolves struck first in the top of the first inning against Portland starter Kason Gabbard. Max Leon led off with a single and Danny Worth doubled down the left field line, putting runners on second and third for Casper Wells. Wells walked to load the bases. Ryan Strieby followed with a walk, scoring Leon from third for a 1-0 Erie lead. With one out, Cale Iorg singled down the right field line, playing Worth for a 2-0 'Wolves advantage after one.
The 'Wolves added to the lead in the top of the fifth against Portland reliever Blake Maxwell. With two outs, Strieby walked for the third time in the game to extend the inning for Alex Avila. Avila singled to left and Strieby advanced to third setting up Iorg. Iorg grounded up the middle, beat out an infield single and Strieby scored to make it 3-0 Erie. Deik Scram followed with a two-run double to the left field power alley, plating both Avila and Iorg for a 5-0 lead.
Portland got on the board in the bottom of the fifth against Erie starter Pat Stanley. Stanley held the Sea Dogs hitless for the first four innings of the game before giving up a leadoff base hit up the middle to Ryan Kalish. Kalish got to moved to second on a one-out single by Iggy Suarez and moved to third on a fielder's choice. Josh Reddick singled home Kalish making it a 5-1 game in favor of the 'Wolves.
The Sea Dogs would threaten in the eighth inning against Zach Simons with two on base and in the ninth against Brett Jensen with the bases loaded. Both relievers worked out of the jams and kept the Sea Dogs limited to a run.
Stanley (1-2) picked up his first win as a SeaWolf going 6.1 innings allowing a run on four this with two walks and three strikeouts.
The 'Wolves outscored Portland 16-6 in the final two games of the series. The season series win over the Sea Dogs was the second in the last three seasons.
The SeaWolves have now won three straight series and improved to 6-3 against the Northern Division.
Erie now heads to Manchester, New Hampshire for a three-game weekend series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
